EWG Verified: A Q&A with our Founders

EWG Verified: A Q&A with our Founders
If you've been following our company on social media, or receive our emails, you have probably heard us proudly talk about our MADE SAFE® Certification! We now have over 100 of our products MADE SAFE certified, more than any other company at this time!

The MADE SAFE® seal confirms that a household product is free of any and all toxins known or suspected to harm human health, animals, or ecosystems. Certified goods have been thoroughly examined by researchers and scientists to ensure they’re made without known dangerous chemicals, like:

  • Carcinogens
  • Developmental and behavioral toxins
  • Endocrine disruptors
  • Flame retardants
  • Heavy metals
  • Toxic solvents
  • Harmful VOCs
We decided it was important to pursue additional certifications for our bath soaks, and are proud to now add the EWG VERIFIED seal to our Lavender Bath Soak, Lemongrass Bath Soak, Wildflower Bath Soak, and Mineral & Coconut Oil (Unscented) Bath Soak.
We sat down with our Founders, Katie and Eric, to learn why they are so proud of their new EWG VERIFIED products!

Question: Why did you choose to get your bath soaks EWG VERIFIED?
Eric: The EWG VERIFIED® products represent the top 2.5 percent of products in EWG’s Skin Deep® database and EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning, based on health, safety and transparency. We think that it is beyond amazing that our bath soaks are now listed in such great company with other companies that prioritize product safety and the health of their customers.
Question: What was the EWG VERIFIED process like?
Katie: I always marveled at how stringent the MADE SAFE certification process is, but the EWG process was stringent in its own unique ways. EWG not only looks at what ingredients are in a product, but they really focus on the safety from a skin care formulation perspective. For certain ingredients like our Epsom salts, they looked at the actual formulation to ensure that we did not exceed a ratio of Epsom salts to dead sea mineral salts. For some of the essential oils, we were not to exceed certain ratios in our formulations, and they can also look at things like the PH of a product. Finally, we had to send our dead sea mineral salts to a lab to be heavy metal tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, antimony, chromium, and nickel.
Question: How is this different than the MADE SAFE certification?
Eric: Clearly we love the MADE SAFE Certification, but we wanted a different perspective on our products and their formulations. This was where the EWG was the perfect standard to use to vet the formulation of our bath salts. Of course we knew that the ingredients were non-toxic, but now we also know that they are free of heavy metals, and are formulated to not be harmful to the skin.
Question: What is your favorite bath salt?
Katie: Eric really isn’t a bath person, so I will answer this one! I actually love our Unscented Mineral Salt & Coconut Oil soak. Being around Fontana HQ most days I am surrounded by all of our lovely essential oil aromas. Sometimes when I go home, I want to treat myself to an unscented bath. But when I am ready for a punch of scent, I gravitate towards our Lavender or our Wildflower Bath Soak.
